Travis Adcock, son of James Adcock moved from North Carolina to Indiana where he changed his name to Travis Emery about 1835. (The records filed with the Indiana courts show the spelling Emery. All subsequent records show the spelling Emry.) He also changed the surnames of all of his children at that time. The Adcocks (now Emrys) belonged to the Society of Friends (also known as Quakers.) Some of the family then moved to the Quaker community of Pleasant Plain, Iowa. Some of the children married members of the Hodson family. The significance of the Hodson family in this research will show up in the next Emry line that I talk about.
Family "stories"
Often, while researching family histories, stories are passed down in the family or links to other lines made that later prove to be inaccurate. A couple show up in this line:
| There was once a thought that the wife of James Adcock was the descendent of King Edward I of England. I understand that this has not proven to be accurate. The family immigrated to what is now the US in the 1600s. |
| There have also been stories of a French-Indian by the name of Kershawn who
changed his name to Emry. This "new" Emry was also from Pleasant Plain, Iowa,
where Travis (Adcock) Emry settled. It turns out that this was one of Travis' sons, not a
Kershawn. The name Kershawn could have been mixed up with a name on Travis' son's wife's
side of the family. |
