Samuel Emery was born in 1783. I do not know where yet for sure, but he lived in northern (Swanton and Fairfax) Vermont, married Elizabeth Owen and died July 21, 1845 in Fairfax, Franklin County, Vermont.
Samuel fought in the war of 1812. One of his descendants moved to Ossian, Iowa where my great-grandfather Frank Emry was born. Frank married Elizabeth Jane Callahan and together they homesteaded in South Dakota near Cactus Flats. His home in South Dakota was listed as Cottonwood, a few miles north of the homestead. As you might have noticed, an 'e' in the name was dropped, apparently when the family moved to Iowa.
Family "stories"
Often, while researching family histories, stories are passed down in the family or links to other lines made that later prove to be inaccurate. The following shows up in this line:
| Some family members have said that this Emry name was changed and derived from two (the husband and wife's) names. A couple letters from his, a couple from her's. To date, this has not proven to be true. The only name change found so far is the dropping of the middle 'e' from Emery to Emry. |
